Choose the Right Record Route

Use the right custodian for the question instead of assuming every arrest-related item is held by the same office.

  • For current available custody or release-status information, start with Michigan VINE and record the time checked.
  • For a county booking record or to ask whether a booking photograph exists, use the county FOIA form with a name, date, agency, and specific request.
  • For a court filing or disposition, use Michigan Courts case search and the relevant clerk.
  • For a later state-prison, parole, probation, or discharge record, use MDOC OTIS, which is not a county booking search.
  • For federal custody, use the Bureau of Prisons locator or the ICE Online Detainee Locator when its requirements fit the question.

The county records guide explains why status, booking, court, state custody, and federal custody should not be combined into one undated result. A booking or charge is an accusation, not a conviction.
